Located between Rome and Viterbo, Lake Bracciano is the most famous of the lakes in Lazio and has always been the focus of interest of tourists, nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. The lake offers the possibility of relaxing on its equipped beaches, cooled by the shade of willows and poplars, or practising numerous water sports on its waters.
It is also very pleasant to stroll or cycle along the lakefront to admire the various glimpses of its natural heritage and then move on to the villages on its shores such as Bracciano, Trevignano Romano and Anguillara Sabazia, which organise country festivals and rural traditions where you can taste local cuisine. The Bracciano-Martignano Natural Park also includes Lake Martignano, also of volcanic origin, characterised by its small size and almost perfectly circular shape. Lake Martignano and Lake Bracciano can be said to be ‘brothers’ as they were generated by the same volcano.
Bracciano is the largest town on the lake, standing on its western shore and with an imposing mediaeval castle dominating the town: the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle. Surrounded by irregularly shaped walls, it can be visited on guided tours that allow visitors to discover magnificent dwellings and secret rooms. Visiting the historical centre surrounding the castle, rich in churches and historical buildings, and walking along the characteristic mediaeval streets, the tourist finds himself as if immersed in an era a thousand years ago.
