Orte, an ideal destination for lovers of bygone eras, became a rich municipality in earlier centuries due to its strategic location. Always a crucial junction, even today it is still a focal point for both railways and motorways. Orte is a town of mediaeval imprint: among its streets and palaces one can still breathe an ancient air full of charm, especially during the celebrations for the Octave of Sant’ Egidio (held every year from 31 August to the second Sunday in September). On this occasion, for a week, games, shows and events take place in the streets of Orte. Among the most important events of this period is the famous Palio degli Arcieri, in which the strongest archers of the various town districts
compete. Orte, however, is also history and sacred architecture. We recall the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of San Pietro and the Church of San Biagio. There are also many museums, including the Museo Diocesano di Orte, the Museo Comunale Civico Archeologico and finally the Museo delle Confraternite, inside the large sacristy of the Church of Santa Croce, which houses devotional objects dating back to the 17th-18th centuries. The historical centre of Orte, which has its heart in Piazza della Libertà, is a maze of alleys and small squares, with doors and balconies adorned with flowers, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Latium countryside. Orte Sotterranea is certainly the city’s most important attraction. On guided tours, you can discover the vast network of tunnels that penetrate underground into the city.
