The charming aerial village of San Martino was built on a hill, at an altitude of 561 meters above sea level. A long series of terraced houses of identical dimensions and shapes leaning against the outer walls make up the town's urban layout, which, when seen from above, has a semi-elliptical shape. The Abbey was built during the first half of the thirteenth century on a previous structure dating back at least two centuries earlier, by the French Cistercian monks from Pontigny. The facade, surrounded by two seventeenth-century bell towers (designed by Borromini) topped with pyramidal spires, features a large Gothic polyphore; the exterior part of the apse with a polygonal shape and a double row of single-light windows is remarkable. Worth visiting is the Doria Pamphilj Palace, built incorporating part of the former convent, by Donna Olimpia Maidalchini-Pamphilj.
