An Etruscan-Roman sanctuary was recently discovered in a spring near Macchia delle Valli. The complex, semi-caved into the living rock, consists of a series of rocky rooms, open-air cultic areas and a modest built structure that housed cult furnishings.
Inside the cave is the small cell that constitutes the sanctuary. A statue of Demeter was found inside the chamber. Demeter is the female deity identifiable with the Greek Demeter and also worshipped by the Etruscans under the name of Vei, and by the Romans under the name of Ceres. Demeter was the Goddess of grain and cultivated land and was the architect of the cycle of the seasons and thus the protector of harvests.
