Tuscania, like many other towns in the Viterbo area, stands on several promontories of tufa rock. According to mythology, Tuscania wasfounded by Ascanius, son of Aeneas, on the territory where twelve puppies of dogs were found (hence the Latin name Tus-cana). According to another legend, the founder was Tusco, son of Hercules and Araxe. The ancient Romans called it Tuscana, city of the Tusci, the name by which the Etruscans were called. The National Archaeological Museum in Tuscania stands out among the most important points of interest: sarcophagi, decorative and architectural elements and various categories of finds from the Etruscan period are preserved here. In addition to this, you can visit the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo Baronale, the Lavello tower and, just outside the town centre, the beautiful churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore.
