The "Corsa a Vuoto" of San Bartolomeo in Ronciglione is one of the oldest and most characteristic events of the city, dating back to the Middle Ages. Celebrated in honor of San Bartolomeo, the patron saint of the town, this race is an integral part of local traditions and represents an event of great historical and cultural significance. This year it will take place on Sunday, July 28.

Historical Aspects

Medieval Origins: The Corsa a Vuoto has deep roots dating back to the Middle Ages, when horse races without jockeys were a highlight of the patron saint celebrations. Originally, the races were held to celebrate important religious and social events, particularly in honor of San Bartolomeo. It originates from the one established in 1466 by Pope Paul II.

Tradition and Revitalization: Over the centuries, the tradition of Corsa a Vuoto has been maintained and revitalized, becoming a fixed appointment for the community of Ronciglione. The race symbolizes not only a competition between the different districts, but also a celebration of local identity and history.

Race Description

During the race, the horses are released along a route that crosses the streets of the historic center, without jockeys, and must complete the race following the outlined track.

Preparation: The horses are carefully prepared by the various districts of Ronciglione, which invest time and resources in training the animals. This creates a healthy competition between the districts, each eager to see their horse win the race.

Route: The race course winds through the ancient streets of Ronciglione, creating a unique and evocative atmosphere. The start (or "mossa") takes place in Piazza Principe di Piemonte, where the starter releases the rope giving the signal to start. The streets are decorated for the occasion and the public gathers along the route to cheer and admire the competing horses.

Atmosphere: The event is characterized by a festive and engaging atmosphere, with costume parades, flag-waving shows, music, and food stands offering local specialties. This makes the Corsa a Vuoto not only a sports competition, but also a great popular festival that celebrates the culture and traditions of Ronciglione.
